I’m starting to get upset / annoyed with Age of Conan.  Probably it’s more fair to say, disappointed — but you can only scream at your monitor for so long before disappointment spirals down into something else.

My main character is a ranger — and as with all games that have a ranger class, he’s broken.  Primarily when it comes to damage output.

I understand that a range, being a subset of the rogue class, can’t tank.  I’m there.  In EQ1 rangers were made of paper.. I’m cool with that.. But the ranger should be able to put out some damage, and since they can’t tank, they should be able to put out damage at range.  If they can’t for any reason do ranged damage, what’s the point of a ranger?

It’s interesting.. I pride myself on beta testing just about every MMO that has ever been.. So I was a little sad when for whatever reason, the gods decided to not let me into the Age of Conan beta.  Eh, these things happen, however this meant I was pretty much slobbering at the bit waiting for access to the game. (I was one of the few that got into the paid early access for the game however, so that’s close enough for me. )

Firstly let me say, funcom has done a wonderful job capturing and portraying the world of Conan.. I’m having a lot of fun.

However, I was initially worried.   I beta tested and played Anarchy Online and by all accounts it’s initial release was a nightmare. It was truly, truly bad.  Funcom, and all other game companies for that matter, learned that day that to release a broken game dooms the game forever.  I had assumed that funcom learned its lesson and would release a stable game, in fact I had visions of board meetings in which the members all chanted, “please not like AO”… So you can imagine my shock when at 12pm my time, when the doors were to open.. Nothing happened.

So as some of you know I have been playing the hell out of Eve.. I am really enjoying the game and things are going nicely. I have created a baby combat alt on a second account that I use to PVP and generally misbehave and I’m enjoying it very much. And I mean I’ve been really bad.. heh I have done everything from gate camping to ore stealing, which is generally something I don’t think of very highly. But its actually quite a lot of fun..

My goal was not to grief or be a jerk, but rather to learn what can be done and the best way to go about it. That way when someone is doing it to me, I know. The irony of it so far is, I am enjoying it quite a lot. Probably more than I should to be honest. My main has very expensive ships and implants that I don’t want to risk, plus he is entirely skilled towards industry and production. When I created the new alt, I said that I would never fear risking him. If he dies.. so be it. No big deal.

Well I have gotten myself into the Pirates of the Burning Sea (PotBS) beta and been playing that a bit. Let me preface everything I have to say by saying, I really want to love this game. I have always loved this genre, even before the Pirates of the Caribbean movies turned it into a fad. I played all the pirates games of old and really love the concept of the open sea. It really was the final frontier of its day.

Having said that, I think PotBS could be a good game, but right now it’s really really rough. I fear it’s gonna be yet another example of a game released before it was ready. Sony is at the helm so of course this is to be expected.

The download of the game installer was simple and went without a hitch, however the darn thing took over 24 hours to patch!! This was due to the patcher being completely broken and SOE blaming everyone but themselves.

Games should be fun

So I have been playing Eve Online again a bit and have been thinking about it and what it does “wrong”. I’m trying to focus on what should have been done so that new games like Infinity Earth don’t fall into the same trap. I just hope the new games will listen and take note.

First let me start by saying that I think Eve Online is a beautiful game and can be fun once you get DEEP into the game, and it’s certainly challenging. However a new players experience is terrible and doesn’t give any clues as to what is to come later, more over the PVE aspect of the game is down right bad which means new players are forced to deal with experienced players in a PVP realm often resulting in repeated trouncings with no end in sight.

Is it any wonder that many new players leave pretty quick? Think of what kind of power house this game would be if it’s new player experience was just a bit better..
